BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

In 1993 no Arctic Foxes were observed on the islands and waders bred successfully. At least five territorial Dunlin were recorded at Sverdrup island. At Russky island Purple Sandpiper commonly bred, in August broods of this wader consisted of one to three chicks. Single pairs of Turnstone, Sanderling Calidris alba and Little Stint bred. Breeding conditions for birds were generally favourable.

Rodent dynamics:

Lemmings do not occur on the Izvestiy Tsik Islands while at Sverdrup island old signs were recorded in 1992, and at Russky island a few winter lemming nests were found in 1993.
